Baybay City education exec receives global award

DR. MANUEL ALBAÑO, the Schools Division Superintendent of Baybay City in Leyte province, joined other education leaders during the recent International Educators’ Convention and Gabi ng Parangal 2024, organized by the Association of Fil-Am Teachers of America (AFTA) at the Sheraton Hotel in Flushing, New York, USA.

Albaño, who was recognized as one of AFTA’s Global Education Ambassador awardees, “has spent his life dedicated to education, profoundly influencing countless lives through his commitment to academic excellence and holistic development.”

“Dr. Albaño implemented innovative programs, fostered inclusive learning environments, and advocated for every child’s right to quality education. His leadership is rooted in empathy for both students and educators, creating a culture of collaboration and growth,” AFTA said in recognizing Albaño’s contribution to the Philippine educational system.

“Known for his hands-on approach, Dr. Albaño regularly visits schools to engage with both teachers and students, encouraging their pursuit of excellence… Dr. Albaño’s legacy as an educator remains a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative power of learning,” it added.

A native of Palompon, Leyte, Albaño completed both his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. at Palompon Institute of Technology.

He is married to Eva Albaño, a public school principal. Their daughter, Atty. Phoebe Charis Albaño, who is also a Certified Public Accountant, “upholds her father’s values of hard work, integrity, and dedication to service.”

He was previously assigned as Schools Division Superintendent in several divisions of the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Eastern Visayas region, including Maasin City, Northern Samar, Ormoc City, and Leyte.

Albaño has received numerous recognitions in his career, including the 2022 Most Inspiring Teacher of the Republic of the Philippines by Saceda Youth Lead and the 2022 International Excellence Award as Outstanding Teacher.

Aside from his work in the education sector, Albaño served as the Council Scout Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of the Philippines Leyte Chapter and on the Board of Directors for the Philippine Red Cross in Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, and Leyte. (Ronald Reyes/SunStar Philippines)
