AN 11-MONTH-OLD baby died in a fire that hit Barangay Duljo Fatima in Cebu City around 8 p.m. Sunday, April 16, 2023.

Senior Fire Officer 3 Wendell Villanueva, spokesperson of the Cebu City Fire Station, said the baby was left at home when the fire broke out at 8:24 p.m. in 52K Bohol Village, Spolarium St. in Barangay Duljo Fatima.

The fatality was identified as Jeydane Reil Puza, who was supposed to celebrate his first birthday on April 27.

Duljo Barangay Councilor Alberto Balondo said that based on their initial investigation, the mother of the baby, Janice Rodriguez, was in an internet café, while her partner, Marino Milyumida, was having a drinking spree when the fire broke out.

The baby was left sleeping at home with a candle burning nearby.

Fire investigators believe the unattended candle caused the fire that destroyed the family’s home.

The Cebu City Fire Station raised the first alarm at 8:29 p.m. and the blaze was declared under control at 8:34 p.m. It was declared fire out at 8:50 p.m.

The fire left a P12,500 worth of damage, said Villanueva. (BBT/LMY)
