THE Davao-based Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) successfully rescued 19 passengers from a motorized banca that capsized off the coast of Barangay Ilang, Davao City.
In a Facebook post, CGDSEM reported that the boat, carrying 19 passengers, capsized due to engine trouble.
“Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to enhance maritime safety,” the Coast Guard stated.
The vessel reportedly encountered engine failure on March 22, 2025, causing it to drift before being overwhelmed by strong currents and large waves, leading to its capsizing and leaving passengers stranded.
At around 11 a.m., the Coast Guard Sub-Station Ilang and BRP Malamawi launched a search and rescue operation in coordination with the Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO), City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and Task Force Davao (TF-Davao).
The rescued passengers were transferred to BRP Malamawi and transported to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Panacan Wharf, where they received medical attention.
CGDSEM spokesperson Ensign Winston Gonzales told GMA Super Radyo Davao that the banca was heading to the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) when it suffered an engine malfunction. Large waves then caused it to capsize.
Further investigation revealed that the vessel lacked the necessary permit to travel to Igacos. RGP
