A total of 21 persons with disabilities from Guihulngan, Negros Oriental received adult wheelchairs and food packs from the GMA Kapuso Foundation.
According to “24 Oras,” Friday, this is in line with the upcoming National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week happening on July 17-23.
Among those who received a wheelchair is Arpil Velaspin, a vegetable farmer who became paralyzed after falling from a tree in 2000.
Since then, Arpil has been using a contraption made with a sack, wood, and wheels tied to his legs as his feet.
“Masisira yung damit ko kapag walang sapin na nilalagay,” Arpil said. “Kapag walang gulong, mahihirapan ako gumalaw. Ang sako nagsisilbing proteksyon ng balat para hindi masugatan ng mga bato.”
Arpil earns only P600 a week, which he and his mother use for their daily needs.
“Kahit ganyan ang sitwasyon niya, gusto talaga niya makatulong, para mabuhay kami,” Arpil’s mother, Fernanda Valespin, said.
