The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has launched an e-visa system that will allow foreign tourists to apply for visitor’s visa online, according to JP Soriano’s report on GMA Integrated News’ Unang Balita on Friday.
DFA Secretary Enrique Manalo said the e-visa system “will allow foreign nationals to apply for visitor’s visas remotely through their personal computers, laptops, and mobile devices.”
According to the DFA, the convenience from using the e-visa system will encourage more tourists to visit the Philippines.
Manalo said the soft launch of the e-visa system will be conducted in Shanghai, China.
“I am pleased to share that the Philippine e-visa system is ready to be soft launched for beta testing which will be led by the Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai,” he said.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, China was the second country, behind South Korea, with the most tourists coming to the Philippines.
One of their favorite destinations is Boracay Island, as China has a direct flight to Aklan where the world-famous island is located.
While expressing support to the e-visa system, Senate tourism committee chairperson Senator Nancy suggested a face-to-face interaction in the process of e-visa application to prevent entry of undesirable travelers to the country.
As the “ber months” approach, the Bureau of Immigration said it is preparing for the expected influx of travelers in the Philippines. It will set up special lanes for overseas Filipino workers and “balikbayans.” —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA Integrated News
