President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday welcomed Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay during the latter’s courtesy call at Malacanang.

The event was the first time the Philippine President hosted a Bhutanese leader at the Palace.

During the meeting, Marcos told the Prime Minister that efforts to organize representation for non-resident ambassadors between the Philippines and Bhutan will become increasingly important for enhancing ties.

The Philippines and Bhutan also reaffirmed their commitment to work together for skills training and upskilling of workers through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

Marcos said that after the pandemic, new partnerships should be forged with friends around the world, not only in tourism and cultural exchange, but also in people-to-people, trade, and investment.

Diplomatic ties between the Philippines and Bhutan were established on October 6, 2025.

The Philippines has been exporting commodities to Bhutan, including electronic products, machinery, and transport equipment, as well as woodcrafts and furniture.

Its top import commodities from Bhutan are wine, fresh grapes, and virgin olive oil.
