Luzon grid under yellow alert anew on Friday afternoon

The Luzon power grid will be placed under yellow alert again on Friday afternoon due to thin supply reserves.

In its grid bulletin as of 8:30 a.m., May 31, 2024, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said the Luzon island’s power transmission system will be under yellow alert on the following hours:

  • 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

The grid operator said Luzon island has an available capacity of 14,086 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 12,970MW.

“Two plants have been on forced outage since 2023, three between January and March 2024, and 10 power plants between April and May 2024; while nine are running on derated capacities, for a total of 2,598.3MW unavailable to the grid,” the NGCP said.

The grid operator also cited the following factors which contributed to the raising of yellow alert:

Forced outage of the following plants: Pagbilao 1 (382MW), 2 (382MW), QPPL (460MW), San Lorenzo 50 (265MW), Limay 7 (70MW)

Deration of the following plants: Masinloc 1, Masinloc 2, Masinloc 3, Sual 2, Limay 8, Limay 2, GNPD 2, Calaca 2

“The Visayas and Mindanao grids are under normal condition,” the NGCP said. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
