Two Mindanao Seascapes Gain National Conservation Honors

The Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) in General Santos City, one of 240 legislated marine protected areas in the Philippines, has been recognized as a lifeline for fisherfolk, youth volunteers, and marine wildlife like dugongs and dolphins. SBPS was honored as the Champion for Outstanding National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS)-Marine Protected Area and received the Special Award for Best in Enforcement at the 2025 Para el MAR Awards in Iloilo City. This recognition highlights the nearly three-decade-long efforts of local governments, academe, fisherfolk organizations, and enforcement agencies in sustaining the bay. On the other side of Mindanao, the Mabini Protected Landscape and Seascape (MPLS) in Davao de Oro was also recognized as a finalist, showcasing its conservation achievements. Both sites credited their success to strong partnerships, community-driven governance, and innovative efforts. SBPS, protected since 1996, has seen initiatives like deputizing fisherfolk as Bantay Dagat, rehabilitating mangroves, and doubling strict protection zones, leading to the return of marine wildlife. MPLS, strengthened under the 2018 E-NIPAS Act, has enriched coral reefs, revived seagrass beds, and restored mangrove forests. The Para el MAR Awards, described as the “Oscars of marine conservation,” evaluate biodiversity outcomes, enforcement, governance, sustainable financing, and community participation. The awards inspire pride and ownership among local communities and validate the efforts of MPA managers. Both SBPS and MPLS view the recognition as both a celebration and a challenge, with plans to expand science-driven programs, invest in innovative technologies, and strengthen law enforcement. Their stories send a powerful message: conservation is a daily choice, proving that even seas once plundered can heal.
