Tropical Storm Verbena Bringing Heavy Rain to Mindanao Ahead of Landfall

Tropical Depression Verbena caused heavy rains and bad weather in several areas in Mindanao, resulting in raging floods that swept away houses in multiple locations. In El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental, zero visibility was reported due to the heavy downpour, and 22 towns in the area suspended classes, while Cagayan de Oro City declared half-day class suspensions. In Butuan City, floods reached knee level, prompting residents to salvage their belongings, and a residential area in Barangay Bitang-agan was left stripped bare after the flood swept away houses. Residents reported that around eight houses were swept away, including two houses and a store belonging to a family. The affected residents will be temporarily sheltered at the old barangay hall and an elementary school, and initial assistance such as rice and food has been distributed, but the evacuees are in need of sleeping mats as their belongings were swept away by the flood. Authorities in Butuan City evacuated over 115 families from different barangays amid the rough weather.
