DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 21 September) – Leaders of the anti-corruption protest at Freedom Park on Sunday emphasized that systemic change is necessary to end corruption in the Philippines, demanding full accountability from public officials implicated in controversial flood control projects. The rally coincided with the 53rd anniversary of martial law. Around 300 protesters, including students, workers, and professionals, gathered at Freedom Park on Roxas Avenue, organized by the Citizens Rage Against Corruption (CRAC). Former Bayan Muna representative Karlos Isagani Zarate stated that corruption is systemic and deeply entrenched in government institutions, perpetuating the oppression of the Filipino people. He called for overturning the current system to build a new one. Mags Maglana of Konsensya Dabaw noted that systemic corruption and human rights violations have persisted since the Marcos Sr. era, while Fe Salino of Samahan ng Ex-detainees Laban sa Detensyon at para sa Amnestiya Davao urged the Marcos family to return stolen wealth. CRAC condemned the systemic corruption and impunity, demanding justice for those responsible. Meanwhile, a pro-Duterte rally at Rizal Park drew thousands, calling for the former president’s return amid his ICC detention.
