Teenager Rescued After Surigao del Sur Landslide

A 17-year-old girl was injured after a landslide covered a house in Barobo, Surigao del Sur on Friday morning. Renan J. Aben, chair of Barangay Tambis, reported that Allyssya Manabing Chua of Sitio Sorex was trapped when soil and large rocks cascaded down and struck their house around 7:30 a.m. She was rescued 20 minutes later by neighbors who helped clear the debris and pull her out. Chua sustained multiple fractures and was rushed to a hospital by the Barobo Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office. Aben noted the rescue was challenging due to the large rocks that fell. Pre-emptive evacuation had been implemented on Thursday due to continuous heavy rains, followed by forced evacuation on Friday. Around 200 households from Sitio Sorex, identified as a mining area, and those near rivers were evacuated to Dinuyan Integrated School in Sitio Upper Banangilid. Monitoring operations continue in coordination with the Army’s 67th Infantry Battalion, the 3rd Special Forces Battalion, and the Philippine National Police. Aben urged residents to remain alert for possible landslides, flooding, and falling trees, advising those in vulnerable areas to move to designated evacuation sites. The local government of Barobo has extended the suspension of classes and work in all private and public sectors due to ongoing adverse weather conditions. (Queenie Casio / MindaNews)
