DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 03 March) — A senior citizen was killed by a speeding motorcycle while crossing a pedestrian lane along Elpidio Quirino Avenue.
Capt. Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson for Davao City Police Office (DCPO), identified the victim as Encarnacion O. Bongcalon, 73, a resident of General Malvar Street in Poblacion District.
She said Bongcalon had just crossed the pedestrian lane fronting Santos Building but upon reaching the opposite lane, was suddenly hit by a Honda motorcycle.
She said the driver of the motorcycle, Alvin R. Tañeza, 27, was traveling along Quirino Avenue from San Pedro Street.
Tuazon added that due to the impact of the collision, the victim was thrown 17 steps away from the possible point of impact.
She said the driver sustained injuries.
According to Tuazon, Taneza is now under police custody for reckless driving. Speed limit in the area for light vehicles/motor vehicles is 40 kph.
The incident happened a few meters away from the Davao Doctors Hospital.
Tuazon said Davao City Central 911 immediately dispatched its personnel but medical responders declared the victim dead after checking her vital signs.
