Police in Davao Urge Social Media Users to Avoid Spreading Unverified Information

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has reminded social media users to be more responsible and cautious when posting incidents online, following a misleading post about a supposed “hostage-taking” incident that went viral. Acting city director Col. Hansel Marantan clarified that the incident, which involved a man identified as “Renz” choking a woman named “Alyza,” was misrepresented as a hostage situation by Facebook user Diocelyn Jabillo. DCPO spokesperson Hazel Caballero-Tuazon emphasized the need to avoid sharing unverified information, as it wastes resources and causes unnecessary panic. She urged the public to ensure that posts are true, verified, and not fabricated. Tuazon noted a decline in the spread of fake information but warned that cybercrime charges could be filed against users spreading false reports under Republic Act 10175, which penalizes the dissemination of false information with up to six months of imprisonment. The DCPO debunked other viral kidnapping claims, including incidents in Barangay Buhangin and an alleged abduction by a black van, confirming that no such reports were filed. Marantan stressed the importance of allowing police to conduct thorough investigations to avoid confusion and ensure accurate information. Renz, who was intoxicated and dealing with personal issues following the death of his live-in partner, is now in police custody and faces charges of physical injury and grave coercion.
