Northern Mindanao Ex-Rebels Granted Amnesty by Government

At least 18 former communist rebels who surrendered to the 4th Infantry Division and Police Regional Office-Northern Mindanao have been granted amnesty by the government as part of a program to reintegrate former New People’s Army combatants into society. The former insurgents have been cleared of charges through safe conduct passes and official amnesty documents. National Amnesty Commission Commissioner Jamar Kulayan noted that this is a partial commitment by the government, hoping they will continue to live peaceful lives and contribute to the country’s progress. The safe conduct pass provides protection from arrest and prosecution for crimes covered by the amnesty proclamations. Around 200 applications have been received since the program opened, with 150 coming from members of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front. The rebel returnees have expressed gratitude towards the government, with one former rebel, “Mary Grace,” stating that she no longer fears imprisonment or death, and is grateful for the opportunity to start anew.
