Cagayan de Oro artist to be honored during National Arts Month

The late Pennessencio “Nonoy” Estarte, the city’s foremost artist, will be feted with honors during the celebration of the National Arts Month celebration this coming February 19.

JC Salon, officer-in-charge of the Cagayan de Oro Museum, said the works of Estarte will be displayed and viewed in the museum starting February 19.

“The works of Nonoy inspired scholars and artists here. He has continued to shape the artistic landscape of our city,” Salon said.

Estarte, a self-taught painter, illustrator, muralist and cartoonist, died in Cagayan de Oro City May 22 last year.

He was instrumental in the creation of the Cagayan de Oro Arts Guild.

COMELEC all set for plebiscite in BARMM’s Special Geographic Area

The Commission on Elections is set for the plebiscite that would create eight municipalities in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao this coming April 13.

COMELEC Chair George Erwin Garcia said they are just waiting for the Department of Budget and Management to release P80 million to fund the plebiscite.

Garcia said the plebiscite will cover more than 100,000 registered voters from 63 barangays that formed as the Special Geographic Area of the BARMM.

He said once the majority of the voters approve the creation of eight municipalities, the towns will be named as Pahamuddin, Kadayangan, Nabalawag, Tugunan, Ligawasan, Malidegao, Old Kabakan and Kapalawan.

Army’s 4ID in talks with Cagayan de Oro LGU on demolition issue

Officials of the Army 4th Infantry Division and the local government of Cagayan de Oro City is holding a series of meetings to ease the impending demolition of houses on a military reservation lot inside Camp Evangelista in Barangay Patag here.

Major Francisco Garello, 4ID spokesperson, said the demolition is scheduled in April and would affect some 427 families or 1,974 individuals.

Garello said the Supreme Court ruled on July 13, 2022 denying the petition of the residents that the land they occupied is not part of the Camp Evangelista military reservation.

He said the Army recognized the potential impact of the demolition to the families and this is the reason why they are doing it slowly consulting with the LGU.

2 rebels killed in clash with Army in Misamis Oriental, Surigao Sur

Army soldiers killed two communist rebels in separate encounters in Misamis Oriental and Surigao last February 11 and 12, the military said.

Major Francisco Garello, 4th Infantry Division spokesperson, said that on February 11, soldiers belonging to the 58th Infantry Battalion encountered nine rebels in Sitio Kayagan, Barangay Kayagan in Balingasag town in Misamis Oriental.

Garello said the firefight lasted 10 minutes and resulted in the death of a certain Miguel Sereño alias Bestre, an alleged vice squad leader.

He said an Ingram Mac-10 machine pistol and a backpack full of detonating cord and blasting caps were seized by Army troopers.

In Lianga, Surigao del Sur, Special Forces troops clashed with NPA rebels in Barangay Baucawe, killing one and capturing an M60 machine gun.

Garello identified the dead female NPA member as “Sunshine,” reportedly a medic.
