Marawi votes on 3 additional barangays

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 09 March) – Voters in Marawi City on Saturday went to polling precincts to vote on the proposal to create three more barangays.

The Commission on Elections held a security command conference Friday morning in Marawi for the March 9 plebiscite.

Comelec chair George Ervin Garcia attended the command conference along with Army and police officials at Kampo Ranao, headquarters of the 103rd Infantry Brigade.

The proposed barangays are identified as Barangay Sultan Corobong, Barangay Sultan Panoroganan and Barangay Amgoyao.

The Comelec said Barangay Sultan Corobong will be taken from Barangay Dulay Proper, Barangay Sultan Panoroganan from Barangay Kilala, and Barangay Amgoyao from Barangay Patani.

If ratified, the total number of barangays of Marawi will be 99.

Suspected BIFF leader captured in Maguindanao del Sur

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 09 March) – An alleged leader of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters is presently detained at the Maguindanao provincial detention facility following a firefight that resulted in the death of his son.

Capt. Joel Lebrilla, police chief of Rajah Buayan town, Maguindanao del Sur said Lakmodin Manontok Nandin alias “Marrox,” 45, tagged as a sub-leader of the BIFF-Karialan faction was arrested in Barangay Pisandawan in their town following a firefight Sunday night.

Lebrilla said the firefight resulted in the death of Mohammad Nandin, son of the arrested BIFF sub-leader.

P3.4M smuggled cigarettes seized in Basilan

CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 09 March) – Police arrested two suspects and confiscated cartoons of contraband cigarettes with a street value of P3.4 million in Basilan province this week.

Lt. Colonel Helen Galvez of the Zamboanga PNP regional information office said policemen on a sea patrol spotted two motorboats off the waters of Hadji Muhtamad town in Basilan.

When stopped and inspected, Galvez said the boats were found to be loaded with 60 cases of untaxed cigarettes estimated to be worth P3.4 million pesos.

She said the police arrested the two boat operators and turned the contraband over to the Bureau of Customs. (Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews)
