4ID soldiers join military exercise in Nueva Ecija
CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 02 March) – The 4th Infantry Division sent a contingent of its soldiers to participate in the biggest ever military exercise of the Philippine Army in Fort Magsaysay in Nueva Ecija.
The 42nd Division Reconnaissance Company left Bancasi Airport in Butuan City on board a Philippine Air Force C130 plane last Wednesday.
They will join 5,000 soldiers from other Army units in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao in the military training exercise called CATEX “KATIHAN” on March 10.
4ID Chief Major General Jose Maria Cuerpo II said the exercise will test the Army’s capability to move, maneuver and sustain large-scale combat operations as it shifts from internal to territorial defense.

Quakes force suspension of classes in Tandag City
CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 02 March) – Classes in all levels were suspended in Tandag City last Thursday morning following a series of earthquakes that jolted Surigao del Sur province.
Mayor Roxanne Pimentel also suspended work in all public offices as residents fled their homes as the ground shook.
“The suspension of classes and work is aimed to ensure the safety of the school children and workers in the government,” Pimentel said.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the series of earthquakes first hit at 8:10 am Thursday with a magnitude of 5.3.

2 vessels seized for illegal fishing in Zamboanga Sibugay
CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 02 March) – The Philippine Coast Guard confiscated two vessels for allegedly using illegal fishing methods in the municipal waters of Kabasalan town in Zamboanga Sibugay last March 1.
In a statement, the Philippine Coast Guard District Western Mindanao said they caught the two boats using modified Danish Seine, a banned fishing practice due to its destructive effects on corals.
The Coast guard said small-scale fishermen affected by the illegal fishing operations alerted them of the presence of the two boats in Kabasalan. (Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews)
