MANILA — The Mindanao Development Authority and the Department of Energy met on January 6 to enhance coordination for a stable and adequate power supply in Mindanao, as the region experiences strong economic growth and rising investment. Led by MinDA Chairperson Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno and Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin, senior officials from both agencies discussed the need to secure sufficient firm baseload capacity and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy solutions, including solar power with battery energy storage systems. Garin highlighted the critical role of the Green Energy Auction in accelerating renewable energy capacity procurement, with pricing assurance and contract duration set at 20 years to provide financing stability and investor confidence. Magno emphasized that Mindanao’s energy future must be secured through a balanced mix of firm baseload and renewable energy sources, as the region anticipates the growth of its minerals industry sector, which will drive future energy demand. Both agencies agreed on a proposed way forward, including convening the Mindanao Power Monitoring Committee, launching the Green Energy Auction for Mindanao, and compiling committed sites for prospective renewable energy projects. The partnership reflects their shared commitment to delivering reliable and least-cost power for Mindanao, with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s national agenda on inclusive energy access and renewable expansion complementing MinDA’s push to integrate solar projects and accelerate renewable energy programs.
