The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will study the relocation of three airports in Mindanao to expand their capacity in anticipation of higher demand. The airports in Zamboanga, Camiguin, and Surigao del Norte need to be transferred to other locations to accommodate bigger aircraft and more passengers. The DOTr is investing P249.65 million for feasibility studies and master plans, including P92.51 million for the rebidding of the detailed engineering design of the New Zamboanga Airport, P79.63 million for the Camiguin Airport relocation, and P77.51 million for the Surigao Airport resettlement. The new airports will feature improved runways, with the New Surigao Airport having a 2,100-meter runway capable of landing larger aircraft like Airbus A320s and Boeing 737s. Consultants have until August 27 to submit their eligibility documents for the projects.
