The Philippine Army’s 2nd Mechanized Infantry “Magbalantay” Brigade has begun intensifying security measures in Lanao del Norte for the May 12, 2025 midterm elections. Brig. Gen. Anthon G. Abrina, brigade commander, stated that 55 armored vehicles from the 4th Mechanized Infantry “Kalasag” Battalion, 5th Mechanized “Kaagapay” Battalion, and the brigade will be deployed across the province. These efforts are coordinated with the Commission on Elections (Comelec), the Philippine National Police, and other AFP branches under the Joint Peace and Security Committee. Augmentation forces will include the Division Reconnaissance Company, 503rd Combat Engineer Battalion, Civil Military Operations Battalion, and military reservists. Col. Rolando Orengo, deputy brigade commander, will oversee the Task Force Halalan 2025 command center at the Governor Arsenio A. Quibranza Provincial Government Center in Tubod, established a week before the election. Six of Lanao del Norte’s 22 municipalities—Nunungan (Red category) and Pantar, Poona Piagapo, Munai, Magsaysay, and Kauswagan (Orange category)—are classified as high security concerns. Abrina emphasized strict enforcement of the Comelec gun ban and vigilance against flying voters to ensure a peaceful election. (Richel V. Umel / MindaNews)
