From Dropout to Achiever: PDL Tops ALS with Second Rank

A 25-year-old man in Misamis Oriental, Calvin John Niño Nuez, graduated high school under the Alternative Learning System (ALS) while being a person deprived of liberty (PDL) at El Salvador City Jail, where he is being held for carnapping and illegal possession of firearms charges filed in 2024. Despite his situation, Nuez finished second in his class, a feat that showcases the effectiveness of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology’s (BJMP) educational program. El Salvador City Jail Warden, Jail Senior Inspector Don Felix Boado, praised the BJMP’s efforts in developing PDLs through educational programs. Nuez expressed his gratitude to those who supported him and encouraged his classmates to continue their studies to secure decent jobs. He also asked for forgiveness, acknowledging the mistakes of his past. The jail management has noted significant positive changes in Nuez since his detention and continues to provide intervention to help prepare him for life after release, including assistance with early release options like plea bargaining and probation.
