Donor Funds Two Water Systems in Tawi-Tawi, Austria

Two water systems will be established in Tawi-Tawi by the end of this year to address freshwater shortages in Sitangkai and Sibutu towns, according to Romeo Montenegro, Assistant Secretary and Deputy Executive Director of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA). Sitangkai will receive a water desalination system, while Sibutu will have a deep ground water system, both classified as Level III water systems, which include a source, reservoir, and piped distribution network meeting national drinking water standards. The $10-million solar-powered project will be funded by Austria-based Adaptation Fund. Tawi-Tawi residents currently rely on deep wells and rainwater, with freshwater often costing 20 to 50 pesos per gallon. The new systems aim to improve water access and potentially support cold chain opportunities for local seafood products. An agreement between the Philippine government and Adaptation Fund is expected to be signed by year-end.
