Break the Silence to Combat Corruption

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 14 September) – The Executive Board of the College Faculty Union of the Ateneo de Davao University is calling on Filipinos to “refuse the silence that enables corruption” and urging students to “refuse to inherit a broken nation without a fight,” encouraging them to be vocal, steadfast in their convictions, and bold in their actions, with the assurance that “your patriotic professors will stand with you.” This appeal was part of a statement titled “A Prophetic Call for National Transformation: Confronting Corruption, Restoring Integrity, Reclaiming the Nation,” released Sunday following a board meeting on Saturday. The statement emphasized that the recent scandal involving the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Congress, and private contractors reflects a deeper “moral decay in governance,” not just a political issue. The union described corruption as a “moral crisis” and a “social sin” that harms the poor, perpetuates inequality, and erodes the nation’s soul. Prof. Hadji Balajadia, President of the College Faculty Union, stated that the declaration aimed to support movements for transparency and accountability, including the “Baha sa Luneta: Aksyon na Laban sa Korapsyon” and “A Trillion Peso March: Mahiya Kayo, Ikulong na” protests on September 21. The union stressed that national transformation is achievable through moral clarity, truth-telling, and collective action, urging the public to confront corrupt systems, dismantle impunity, and rebuild institutions on justice and accountability. They called for unity in demanding leadership rooted in service, integrity, and truth, rejecting the notion that corruption is inevitable. (MindaNews)
