Archdiocese of Davao Advocates Simpler, Sustainable Holy Week Observances

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 31 March) — The Archdiocese of Davao has called on the faithful to adopt simpler and more sustainable Holy Week practices, including reduced travel, carpooling, and mindful participation in religious traditions.

In a March 30 message, Archbishop Romulo G. Valles urged Catholics to take small but meaningful steps to ease hardships, particularly for the most vulnerable, amid global challenges like the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Acknowledging the difficulties many face, Valles encouraged limiting unnecessary vehicular travel and fossil fuel use, suggesting carpooling for liturgical events. He also addressed the “visita iglesia” tradition, clarifying that while meaningful, visiting multiple churches is not obligatory.

The archdiocese emphasized sacrifice, reflection, and care for others during Holy Week, trusting that even modest efforts would be blessed. (Bea Gatmaytan / MindaNews)
