Barobo Mayor Survives Assassination Attempt Amid Anti-Mining Advocacy
TANDAG, SURIGAO DEL SUR – Barobo Mayor Ronito L. Martizano, known for his opposition to large-scale illegal gold mining, survived an ambush on February 3. According to police, Martizano’s van was blocked by another vehicle in Barangay Dughan around 4:10 p.m. Gunmen fired at the mayor’s vehicle before fleeing toward San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.
Martizano and his escort, Private First Class Khevin Mark Claridad of the 67th Infantry Battalion, sustained injuries but are in stable condition after being rushed to a local hospital. The mayor’s daughter, Des Deseree Martizano, confirmed he was hit near the shoulder and requested prayers for their recovery.
The Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office has formed a special task force to investigate the attack, with a person of interest already under monitoring. Martizano had previously reported death threats due to his campaign against illegal mining, including issuing cease-and-desist orders against well-funded operators.
In a 2025 interview, Martizano emphasized shifting from mining to agriculture, citing Barobo’s arable lands. (Queenie Casio/MindaNews)
