Valenzuela City Mayor Wes Gatchalian on Saturday unveiled his city’s plan to build its first water catchment project to address the persistent flooding along a section of McArthur Highway, a major thoroughfare connecting Metro Manila to Central Luzon.
At the PANATAG: Flood Control Resilience Initiatives Summit, Gatchalian announced Valenzuela LGU’s proposed Panatag Water Catchment in Barangay Dalandanan.
The city government will undertake the project in coordination with the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
The first phase of the water catchment project will measure about 230 meters in length with a depth of 5.6 meters by three meters and could store up to 3,000 cubic meters of floodwater.
“Sisiguraduhin na kalidad ang gagamitin sa lahat ng flood control projects at hindi substandard,” Gatchalian said.
(We will ensure that quality is used in all flood control projects and not substandard.)
“Hindi ito overnight project at hindi magiging ghost project,” he said.
(This is not an overnight project, and it will not be a ghost project.)
The Valenzuela mayor also introduced the city’s ATMOS or Advance Telemetry Management and Observation System —a flood and monitoring network that integrates rain gauges, water level sensors, automatic weather stations, and IP cameras, all connected through a resilient wireless mesh network. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
