Truck driver unaware he had run over motorcyclist in Mandaluyong

Two days after a tanker truck allegedly ran over a motorcyclist at the EDSA-Shaw underpass, authorities were able trace and arrest the tanker tuck’s driver.

According to Raffy Tima’s Friday report in “24 Oras,” the driver said he was unaware he had hit anyone. That was why he didn’t stop and kept driving towards his destination.

“Tumuloy po siya sir at naibaba niya ‘yung ilang toneladang gasolina yun sa Lipa, Batangas,” said Police Colonel Cesar Gerante of the Mandaluyong City Police.

The driver explained that he just heard about the motorcyclist and that the fuel tanker he was driving was involved.

However, the PNP-Mandaluyong clarified that based on their investigation, a sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was initially said to have been responsible for the hit and run had nothing to do with it.

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) CCTV footage showed the tanker headed down EDSA when the incident took place.

“Base sa video, ang motor ay tumagilid, tapos yung SUV na nasa likod ng fuel tanker is umiwas pakanan, yung fuel tanker dumiretso, tapos umangat yung motor, makikita na parang may nakalso tapos tumilapon siya ‘yun pumasok siya sa fuel tanker,” said Gerante.

The driver has been investigated for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and abandonment of the victim.

Mandaluyong police asked the SUV driver to cooperate and surrender his dashcam footage.

The incitdet took place right below the MRT Shaw Station at around 5 a.m. on June 14.

It took more than two hours for Philippine National Police-Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) to arrive at the scene. — Sherylin Untalan/DVM, GMA Integrated News
