A storekeeper whose cellphone was stolen by a customer who fled on a motorcycle didn’t give up and gave chase to recover her gadget, causing the suspect to hit another bike and fall.
According to Oscar Oida’s report on “24 Oras,” Genelyn Dayao turned away to get what the suspect was buying before the latter took advantage of the situation to take her mobile phone.
After she noticed that the customer took her phone, Dayao rushed outside the store to give chase.
“Naandoon ‘yung ano ko na, ‘huy, di pa bayad yung cellphone ko.’ Cellphone ko yon, kasi ang daming mawawala pag yung cellphone eh,” Dayao said.
(I said, ‘Hey, my phone isn’t paid yet.’ That was my phone and you lose many things if you lose a phone.)
The chase caused the suspect to hit another motorcycle, drop the phone, and fall.
“Noong patayo siya, kasi palapit na yung ibang tao, dumukot siya sa bag niya. Sabi niya, babarilin ko kayo. Tumakbo na ako papunta dito. Nagtakbuhan na kami,” Genelyn said.
(As he stood up while other people approached, he reached into his bag and said he’d shoot us I ran back here. We all ran away.)
The suspect was able to escape.
It was later revealed that Genelyn was an awarded marathon runner, which was why she was able to chase down the suspect.
“Pag takbuhan, takbuhan lang. ‘Wag kang sasakay ng motor, magpapaguran lang kaming dalawa,” Genelyn said.
(If we’re running, let’s just run. Don’t ride the motorcycle, we’ll both just tire each other out.)
Meanwhile, the barangay captain warned the public that Genelyn’s actions were dangerous and that it would be better to ask for help. —Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/NB, GMA Integrated News
