A 53-year-old man ended up behind bars on Saturday night after he allegedly held his 80-year-old mother hostage during a drunken fit inside their home in Mandaluyong City.
According to EJ Gomez’s report on “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday, the hostage situation took two hours to resolve with the Mandaluyong City Police Station’s SWAT team barging inside the victim’s home to arrest the son and rescue the mother.
Authorities said SWAT personnel found the suspect keeping an eye on his mother, who was unable to leave.
The victim said she arrived at her home on Domingo Guevara St. to see her son already drunk and hurling invectives at her.
“Ayun, nagwawala na siya doon, ‘mamatay ka na sana,’ sinisipa niya yung pintuan ko,” the elderly mother said.
(He was already in a rage. He told me, ‘I hope you die soon.’ He kicked my door.)
The suspect admitted that he had some drinks but denied holding his mother hostage.
“I admit nakainom, pero hindi naman reason yun eh. I love my mother, kaya lang, kasi bossy siya eh,” the suspect said.
(I admit that I had some drinks but that’s not a reason. I love my mother, but she is so bossy.)
The “firearm” that he supposedly used was a lighter that looked like a revolver. The suspect claimed that the replica firearm was his mother’s.
“Lighter yun. Kapag ginanon mo, lalabas dun sa dulo, apoy. Ginamit niya yung panakot ‘yung baril,” the mother said.
(That’s a lighter. If you pull the trigger, a flame will come out of the other end. He used it to scare me.)
At the police station, mother and son faced each other in an emotional confrontation.
“Ano ginawa ko, ‘Nay? Kayo na nga lang yung sinasandalan ko, pero ba’t ganito ginagawa niyo sa akin? Ano kasalanan ko?” the suspect said, as his mother clung on to his black sleeveless shirt.
(What did I do, mother? You’re the only one I am depending on, but why are you doing this to me? What did I do wrong?)
It was not the first time that the suspect caused a ruckus, according to his mother.
“Pag lasing siya, nagwawala. Inaaway ako. At hinihingan ako ng mana,” the mother said.
(When he’s drunk, he picks fights with me. He asks me for his inheritance.)
