PDEA: Over P97M worth of shabu seized, 2 South Africans arrested at NAIA

Around 14 kilograms of shabu worth P97,892,800 were seized Friday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City, according to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

In a statement, the PDEA said the shabu was detected on the baggage of two South African nationals during an inspection at the international arrival area of Terminal 3.

“Based on their flight details, they arrived via Emirates Airline from Johannesburg, South Africa with a connecting flight in Dubai, UAE bound for Manila, Philippines,” the PDEA said.

“According to the suspects, they were convinced by a Nigerian friend from South Africa to an all-expense-paid travel here in the Philippines where they were instructed to meet another Nigerian as soon as they arrive,” the agency added.

Confiscated items from the suspects include cellular phones, travel documents, and identification cards, the PDEA said.

The suspects will face charges for importation of illegal drugs under the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. They may face life imprisonment and a fine of up to P10 million. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA Integrated News
