Passengers continued to flock to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Wednesday to catch flights to various destinations during the Holy Week break.

In Saleema Refran’s report on “24 Oras” on Wednesday, New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), which operates the nation’s primary gateway, said that the daily passenger volume reached 142,000 on Tuesday and was projected to increase ahead of Holy Thursday.

Airport authorities and the NNIC have implemented several measures to manage the surge in passengers, including the deployment of more personnel at check-in counters, immigration and security screening areas, closer coordination with airlines and ground handlers, extended hours for passenger assistance desks, and real-time monitoring of terminal congestion.

Prohibited items were also confiscated from passengers in various airports across the country, such as empty bullet shells, live ammunition, liquid marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, the report said.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said on Tuesday that it expects an increase in airport passengers this year’s Holy Week travel period despite soaring fuel prices.

CAAP projected up to a 10% rise in passenger volume, or about 550,000 travelers passing through airports for the Lenten break. This is higher than last year’s 500,000 passengers.

It said the increase may be attributed to tickets booked prior to the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, which have affected global crude supply and fuel prices.  — VBL, GMA News
