Marikina raises second alarm as river level rises

Water level at the Marikina River reached 16 meters, prompting local officials to raise the second alarm on Saturday.

The Marikina City local government issued the advisory at 7:07 p.m.

The second alarm means residents must evacuate. If the water reaches 18 meters, a third alarm will be raised, and the LGU will implement a forced evacuation.

According to the state weather bureau PAGASA, the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), which is being strengthened by Tropical Storm Falcon has been bringing heavy rain to several parts of the country.

Falcon is expected to intensify into a typhoon but raising tropical cyclone wind signals remains unlikely.

It was last seen 1,215 kilometers east of Central Luzon, Falcon has maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 90 km/h. It was moving northward at 20 km/h. —Sherylin Untalan/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
