Authorities nabbed 172 cockfighters and cockpit employees during a raid in Manila after discovering that bettors engaged in e-sabong.
According to Raffy Tima’s Wednesday reports on “Saksi,” the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) raided the Coloseo de Manila on Tuesday.
The cockpit was legal, but cockfighters engaged in online betting while cockfighting was ongoing.
PNP-CIDG also confiscated computers containing online sabong software.
Meanwhile, the media was barred from talking to the arrested individuals.
In December 2022, Malacañang officially declared online cockfighting illegal nationwide.
PNP-CIDG said of the 172 individuals, 132 were bettors and underwent further processing along with the management, while the others were sent home.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation earlier warned that it is strictly monitoring illegal online gambling activities, especially e-sabong.
It is also working together with the Department of Information and Communications Technology, the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center, and the National Telecommunications Commission to promptly take down illegal online gambling sites.— Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News
