Philippine authorities have arrested a Malaysian man in Parañaque for allegedly selling a prohibited text blast machine capable of mass SMS broadcasting without requiring a database, SIM card, or WiFi connection.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) said the suspect was apprehended during an entrapment operation on Tuesday.
The suspect faces multiple charges, including violations of the Philippine Radio Stations and Radio Communications Regulation Act, the SIM Registration Act, the Data Privacy Act, and the Cybercrime Prevention Act.
According to caller identification service provider Whoscall, over six million SMS scams were reported in the Philippines in 2024. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
