The Land Transportation Office (LTO) said on Tuesday that the company owning the truck involved in last week’s fatal Katipunan Avenue crash could face penalties if found negligent in maintaining its vehicles.
“If wala silang maintenance record, kung pabaya sila sa pag-maintain ng kanilang mga saksakyan, grounds po ‘yun for purposes of suspension, if not revocation of registration. Titignan natin ‘yan,” said LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II in Glen Juego’s SuperRadyo dzBB report.
(If they don’t have maintenance records or failed to maintain their vehicles properly, these could be grounds for suspension or even revocation of registration.)
The LTO emphasized that while the truck driver already faced criminal liability, the truck owner’s potential negligence in vehicle upkeep would also be scrutinized.
“Alam na natin yung kasalanan ng driver na ‘yan, criminally mananagot na ‘yan. Paano yung vehicle owner? Kung totoong pabaya siya sa mayntena ng kanyang mga sasakyan,” Mendoza added.
(We all know the driver is liable criminally. But what about the vehicle owner? If found negligent, they must also be held accountable.)
Last December 5, a truck plowed through several vehicles along the northbound lane of Katipunan Avenue Flyover in Quezon City. Four people were killed in the crash, with 25 others injured.
The truck driver, who initially fled the scene, was arrested the following morning.
The LTO said that the suspect had been issued tickets thrice in the past for overloading, the report added. — DVM, GMA Integrated News
