The number of leptospirosis cases in Quezon City increased by 108.27% from January 1 to October 7 this year compared to the same period last year, the Quezon City local government unit said on Saturday.
The Quezon City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance recorded 277 leptospirosis cases from January 1 to October 7, 2023.
District 2 had the most number of cases at 72. District 5, meanwhile, had the lowest number of cases at 28.
Meanwhile, 33 leptospirosis cases in the city led to death, the LGU said.
Those with symptoms of leptospirosis were advised to immediately go to the nearest health center or hospital for proper medical attention.
Leptospirosis is a possibly fatal bacterial disease that affects human and animals alike. It is caused by spiral shaped bacteria of the genus Leptospira. It spreads through the urine of affected animals and is prevalent in fresh water, soil, and mud.
Symptoms of leptospirosis include high fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, vomiting, jaundice, red eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rash. Some infected persons however, may have no symptoms at all. —KG, GMA Integrated News
