La Salle PH, Poveda, Xavier, ICA suspend classes on Feb. 25 for EDSA People Power anniversary

A consortium of Catholic schools announced the suspension of classes on February 25, 2025 to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

Members of the EDSA Ortigas Consortium of Schools (EDSOR Consortium) are the Immaculate Conception Academy, La Salle Green Hills, Pedro Poveda College, and Xavier School.

“Our schools have agreed to celebrate this date as a special non-working holiday despite Malacañang’s exclusion of this historical event,” EDSOR Consortium said in a Facebook post.

“Recognizing our responsibility as educational institutions, we remain committed to preserving the relevance of the EDSA People Power Revolution, particularly for our current and future generations of students. We will continue to keep the spirit of EDSA alive despite active efforts to undermine it,” it added.

The EDSOR Consortium also urged the public to join the commemoration.

Earlier, the University of Santo Tomas, De La Salle University made a similar announcement of class suspension, according to a memorandum released by the university’s Office of the Secretary General, which “encouraged” Thomasians to participate in activities commemorating the spirit of the revolt, which toppled the two-decade Marcos Sr. dictatorship.”

De La Salle Philippines, meanwhile, said it will continue to “commemorate this shining moment in history, when the collective power of the people prevailed over corruption, abuse, lack of accountability among public officials, and social injustice.”

The EDSA People Power Revolution anniversary was declared a special working day this year, falling on a Tuesday.

In 2024, the EDSA anniversary was also not declared a non-working day as it fell on a Sunday.

“There is a minimal socio-economic impact in declaring such a day as a special non-working holiday since it coincides with the rest day for most workers/laborers,” Malacanang had said. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News
