Industrial fans, better ventilation to ease crowded Manila City Jail amid extreme heat

Industrial fans and repaired ventilation are expected to ease conditions for around 3,000 persons deprived of liberty (PDL) inside the crowded Manila City Jail amid the extreme heat.

According to Super Radyo dzBB’s Luisito Santos on Thursday, the hot weather being experienced is worsening the crowded situation inside the facility.

The Manila City Jail currently has a 250% congestion rate or has over 3,000 inmates, which is beyond the ideal capacity of only 1,000 PDLs.

“Sa ngayon, binigyan natin sila ng mga industrial fans na magagamit nila pangontra sa init na nararamdaman natin ngayon sa loob ng piitan…Kung maliit na electric fan lang, baka hindi kayanin ng hangin yung init na nandito sa loob ng piitan,” said JO1 Christian Velino.

(For now, we have provided industrial fans to counter the heat inside the jail…These are better than the smaller electric fans.)

“At the same time, maayos na rin yung ventilation nila. Yung presko ng hangin, pumapasok naman siya dito, at the same time, yung init na nanggagaling sa loob inilalabas niya rin,” he added.

(At the same time, we also fixed the ventilation inside. Cooler air can enter, and at the same time, the heat from inside is released.)

The extreme temperatures the country is experiencing this time of year are fairly normal as the climate transitions from the wet to dry season, state weather bureau PAGASA earlier said. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
