Extended transport strike felt in some NCR areas

Several commuters in Caloocan City had a hard time commuting on Monday morning amid the extended transport strike, James Agustin reported on Balitanghali.

“Medyo mahirap pero kailangan talaga tiyaga lang [It’s kind of difficult but we need to be patient],” said Felix Conejos, a commuter from Malabon to Valenzuela.

Transport groups PISTON and MANIBELA are holding another nationwide strike from Dec. 18 to 29 in protest of the government’s deadline to consolidate public utility vehicle (PUV) operators as part of the PUV Modernization Program.

The groups believe the modernization program will deprive many PUV operators and drivers of their livelihood.

The strike was an extension of the two-day protest held Thursday and Friday last week.

Many PUV drivers took trips early Monday morning before joining the strike.

“Mawawalan kami ng hanapbuhay kaya kailangan namin ipaglaban ‘yung karapatan bilang isang driver (We will lose our livelihoods so we must fight for our rights),” said Wilfredo Sososco, a jeepney driver. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
