The story of a puppy went viral on Tiktok after it died from infection following an operation to remove swallowed coins.

According to a “State of the Nation” report by Katrina Son on Friday, the video showed the x-ray of the dog, Panda, who began to weaken after it accidentally swallowed three P1 coins.

Fur mom Joana Patty Loyola said that Panda developed an infection and distemper following surgery for the removal of the coins.

Panda succumbed to her illness on September 7.

Philippine Animal Association president Dr. Mitzi Padrinao explained that dogs, especially puppies, often search for things to chew on.

“Yung ngipin nila nagpapalit yan eh. So [in] 6 months, medyo makati ang galagid, so ang tendency is lahat ng makikita nila ngangatngatin. Ang aso, once na sinaway mo, akala aagawin natin yung nginangatngat nila. Ang tendency, lulunukin nila,” said Padrinao.

(Puppies teeth are replaced. In 6 months, their gums are itchy, so the tendency is to chew whatever they can find. Once you call their attention, they often think that you will steal whatever they are chewing, so they tend to swallow it)

Dogs who have swallowed small items are likely to show the following symptoms: vomiting after eating; leaning their head down, but raising the bottom half of their body; and attempting to defecate.

To prevent pets from consuming small items, pet owners are reminded to ensure that their area is pet-friendly and to remove any small items that can be swallowed, including coins, small or plastic toys, and small bones

If a dog has swallowed a small item, immediately rush it to the veterinary clinic so it can be given laxatives to force the item out of its system without surgical assistance. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
