The Bureau of Immigration nabbed a South Korean fugitive who was attempting to extend his tourist visa in the country.
According to a statement on Thursday, suspect Bae Naseok was trying to extend his visa at the BI’s head office in Intramuros on February 12 when the Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) flagged that he was part of a Watchlist Order and a Blacklist Order for being an undesirable alien and a threat to public safety.
He also had a warrant of arrest issued against him in South Korea for allegedly impersonating his victim’s child and installing a remote-controlled application on their mobile to control their phone banking system.
The suspect was able to transfer KRW15 million or a total of $10,430 to his personal account through this technique.
“This arrest demonstrates our firm commitment to upholding immigration laws and ensuring that the Philippines does not become a refuge for foreign fugitives. We will continue to work with international law enforcement agencies to identify and remove individuals attempting to evade justice,” said BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado.
The suspect has been transferred to the BI facility in Bicutan, Taguig pending deportation. — Jiselle Anne C. Casucian/BM, GMA Integrated News
