Six of the nine detainees who escaped from a Manila jail have been recaptured, police said on Wednesday.
This was the latest development on the incident according to a “24 Oras” report by Jun Veneracion. The jailbreak occurred at Manila Police District Station 1 in Tondo at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
The nine persons under police custody are facing various charges that include illegal drugs, robbery and illegal possession of firearms.
Police have welded additional steel bars in the facility.
“Hinaltak nila out of pure force. Baka malambot na siguro yun, pinwersa nila yun. Naalis nila, sakto lang na madaanan ng tao,” said Manila Police District Director Police Colonel Arnold Thomas Ibay.
(The escapees used pure force to break the jail bars that had weakened. They created a gap large enough for a person to pass through.)
Ibay said the families of the 3 detainees who are still at large- Jefferson Tumbaga, Cedric Zodiacal Velasco and John Joseph Laguna- have shared surrender feelers.
The Manila Police District is conducting an investigation on the lapses, probing as to how the cops at the station were unaware of the jailbreak which occurred next to the desk officer and the area being monitored by CCTV camera.
The station commander, his deputy, the duty officer and the policemen on duty have been administratively relieved.
Meanwhile, visitation rights have been suspended for the almost 100 detainees at the station’s jail facility.—Jiselle Anne Casucian/RF, GMA Integrated News
