20 fratmen, 60 paddle hits figured in Bravante ‘hazing’—QCPD

Twenty members took turns in hitting Ahldryn Leary Bravante with paddles during the initiation rites of the Tau Gamma Phi, two of the suspects have told investigators of the Quezon City Police District.

According to Emil Sumangil’s report on “24 Oras,” complaints for violation of the Anti-Hazing Act have been filed against four members of the fraternity.

They are Justine Artates, 20; Kyle Michael De Castro, 21; Lexer Manarpies, 20; and Mark Leo Andales, 20.

Two of them have executed extrajudicial confessions with the assistance of a counsel. They identified six brods and schoolmates in the Philippine College of Criminology who took part in the initiations.

Bravante was a fourth year student at the PCCr.

“More or less, 60 paddle hits ang naibigay sa ating biktima… Nasa two hours ang initiation rites na nangyari,” QCPD director Police Brig. Gen. Red Maranan said.

Police Maj. Dondon Llapitan, chief of the QCPD CIDDU, said the members tried to revive the victim when the latter lost consciousness.

“Bumabagsak na yung katawan niya… Pumikit at nawalan ng malay. Nire-revive nga nila ‘yung victim,” Llapitan said.

“‘Nung hindi na gumagalaw, agad nilang itinakbo sa ospital… Inamin nila na kasama sila sa initiation rites,” he added.

Bravante’s death certificate said that the cause of his death were blunt impact injuries in the lower extremities.

The PCCr has said that it was prepared to cooperate with the authorities in the investigation among students involved in the alleged fatal hazing. —Jiselle Casucian/NB, GMA Integrated News
