Ten motorists were issued traffic violation tickets on Friday for unauthorized use of the EDSA busway, the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT) said on Saturday.
The motorists were apprehended during an operation conducted in Ortigas and Magallanes.
The SAICT also said 36 other motorists were also caught on Friday in the said areas disregarding traffic signs.
Seven others committed obstructions, while five did illegal loading outside the terminal station, it added.
On Thursday, vehicles said to be those of a senator and a congressman were among those the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) apprehended for using the EDSA Busway.
The MMDA said only a few government officials are allowed on the EDSA busway.
The Department of Transportation earlier clarified that only the President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court are allowed to pass through the busway.
Also allowed to use the EDSA busway are on-duty ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars.
Under MMDA Regulation No. 23-002, the increased fines for the violation of both public and private vehicles are:
- First offense – P5,000
- Second offense – P10,000 plus one month suspension of driver’s license, and required to undergo a road safety seminar
- Third offense – P20,000 plus one year suspension of driver’s license
- Fourth offense – P30,000 plus recommendation to Land Transportation Office for revocation of driver’s license
