1 hurt, 113 people lose homes due to wall collapse in Valenzuela

One person was wounded and 28 families or 113 people lost their homes after a wall collapsed in Valenzuela City on Sunday after days of continuous rains caused by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

The injured individual was brought to hospital for orthopedic treatment, according to a report of Dano Tingcungco on Unang Balita on Monday.

Of the affected families, 17 were from Barangays Mapulang Lupa and 11 from Barangay Ugong.

At least eight homes were destroyed due to the wall collapse.

Residents said that as early as 7 a.m. Sunday, they felt that the wall was unsteady before it collapsed at around 9 a.m. and destroyed the houses.

The continuous rains that saturated the soil in the area is one of the factors that caused the wall collapse.

A big tree initially collapsed which triggered the collapse of the surrounding houses, according to a separate report of Susan Enriquez on Unang Balita on Monday.

Valenzuela City Vice Mayor Lorie Natividad-Borja appealed to residents not to go back to their homes yet until it is safe to do so.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development and the local government unit provided assistance to the victims.

The City Engineering Office will assess if it is still safe for residents to build their houses in the area. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA Integrated News
