The Manila city government will regulate rather than prohibit street parking in Binondo, Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said, clarifying that the policy is intended to balance traffic management with the needs of businesses in the historic district.
Domagoso stressed that a total parking ban could have unintended consequences, particularly for commercial establishments that depend on accessible parking for customers, suppliers, and delivery vehicles.
“Binondo is a busy commercial hub. If we remove parking without providing workable alternatives, businesses will suffer,” the mayor said.
He explained that economic activity in the area relies heavily on accessibility, and overly restrictive measures could disrupt daily operations and discourage customers from patronizing local shops and restaurants.
Instead of an outright ban, the city government will focus on organized and properly enforced parking regulations designed to ease traffic congestion while allowing commerce to continue uninterrupted.
Domagoso said the initiative aims to impose clearer rules on where and how vehicles may park, supported by consistent enforcement and coordination with business owners and other stakeholders.
The mayor added that the city’s approach reflects a broader effort to promote public order and road discipline without sacrificing economic vitality in one of Manila’s most important commercial districts.
