SAMAL, Bataan – Pupils of the Samal North Elementary School here enjoyed reading story books at the start of “Catch up Friday” by the Department of Education, aimed at improving the reading skills of Filipino children.
Teacher Marlie C. Siasat gave instructions to her class in Garde I-Wisdom, that after reading the story book, she will ask some questions on what the children read. The children were told to read the book loudly.
She said that this Friday was the start of implementation of DepEd’s project to further enhance the reading capability of school children and to further improve the quality of education.
Siasat noted that the reading skill of children even before the implementation of “Catch up Friday” was okay but believed it will be further improved under the project. “Mas makakatulong ito at enjoy ang mga bata dahil colorful ang mga kuwento sa librong binabasa nila.”
Grade I pupil Jannah Feliz Forbes, 6, said she likes the book she reads. “Gusto ko lagi magbasa. Hindi naman po masiyadong mahirap magbasa.”
Teacher Jaypee G. Dionila, Grade 4-Einstein, told the children to read the story book silently and afterwards called on a reader to read it loudly with the aid of a sound system.
The children then joined the reader in reading the book loudly.
Dionila said the first day of the project ran smoothly in their school. “Enjoy ang mga mag-aaral sa pagbabasa. Inihahanda naming mga guro ang mga kailangan para sa lalong magandang implementation ng ‘Catch up Friday’ na gagawin morning and afternoon.”
Grade 4 Jiannah Glorelle Esguerra, 10, said she enjoys reading. “Hindi naman po ako nahihirapang magbasa.”
“Opo,” replied all the kids in unison when asked if they like reading.
