ON the occasion of Valentine’s Day, Cagayan de Oro City first district Rep. Lordan Suan has filed a bill institutionalizing a so-called heartbreak leave.
Docketed as House Bill No. 9931, Suan pushed what will be known as the Heartbreak Recovery and Resilience Act which among others, entitling employees under the age of 25 to a maximum of one business day of unpaid heartbreak leave per calendar year.
As one’s age progresses so is the number of allowable days of unpaid leave. For instance, employees between the ages of 25 and 35 are entitled to a maximum of two business days of leave while those aged 36 and up are entitled to three days of leave.
In pushing for the bill, Suan argued that unprocessed emotional distress can negatively impact productivity, employee morale and workplace health.
Suan emphasized that dissolution of romantic relationships must be proven by employees who wish to avail of the leave before he or she could avail of the benefit although this is unclear at this point as to how this would be implemented. “This Act aims to offer support and resources to employees experiencing emotional distress due to a recent breakup, promoting their personal well-being and continued contribution to the work force,” Suan said.
