Oro, Misor dialogue critical to sustain dev’t goals

IN lauding the provincial government led by Misamis Oriental Gov. Peter Unabia and other stakeholders, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy called for both city and province to sustain their dialogue in order to enact programs that can meet the challenges they both face now and in the future.

“We showed our unity when we held our first joint meeting of councils (of peace, order, and development) last year…if possible we can come up with a uniform plan and program to meet whatever challenges we face…(through constant dialogue) we can come up with solutions without compromising on our unity (and solidarity),” Mayor Uy said in Visayan during a joint peace and development council meeting between the city and province held today.

In his opening message, Mayor Uy cited some of the city’s concerns such as accessibility and connectivity of roads and improving public transportation and telecommunications.

“But just as we’re experiencing economic benefits due to technological advancements, criminal elements also exploit these developments (for their own ends),” Mayor Uy said in Visayan.

As an example, Mayor Uy said there are drug dealers who use online platforms to secure payments from clients.

“There are criminal elements operating in the province who flee to the city (and vice versa),” Mayor Uy said.

The mayor also cited the urgency to continually upgrade the capabilities of both the city and province in disaster management and emergencies.

“It is said that those who develop faster are likely to face bigger challenges…and if people become complacent and slow (unwilling) to change, then they will be (overwhelmed)…but I believe in the capabilities of (our governments and) institutions from the barangay level to the city and province and even region in facing these challenges,” Mayor Uy said in Visayan.

And in his opening message, Governor Unabia called for cooperation and active participation among all stakeholders in the province and city.

“Thanks to Mayor Klarex and the city government (for their support)…both Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental share the same problems and challenges (and together we may) come up with uniform solutions (to our problems),” Unabia said in Visayan. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
