Governor Unabia urges youth to participate in campaign vs climate change

MISAMIS ORIENTAL – Governor Peter “Sr. Pedro” M. Unabia of this province has urged government leaders to involve the youth in the fight against environmental issues that affect the people.

Unabia said the youth must know and get the right information regarding the pressing concerns about the wanton destruction of the earth which resulted in climate change.

“We must start a massive information campaign. We shall go to schools and inform the youth about the pressing concerns that we are facing right now regarding climate change,’ the governor said.

For his part,  Mr. Ian Rivera – PMCJ said it is high time a summit be made to discuss the effect of climate change while it is not yet too late for everyone.

Rivera said based on studies by many scientists around the world, the effect of climate change is very scary – to the point that people will suffer a lot from heat index and many more “never before experienced calamities.” 

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

Governor Unabia on Monday, July 8, 2024 signed a Memorandum of Understanding to Organize the Renewable Energy and Investments Summit in Misamis Oriental. The MOU was signed and entered into PGMO represented by Gov Unabia and Mr. Ian Rivera – PMCJ, Engr. David Tauli, Atty. Dionel O. Albina USTP Chancellor. It was signing was witnessed by Mr. John Venice Ladaga Provincial Administrator, Board Members Gerardo “Boboy” Sabal III, Dexter Yasay, Rey Buhisan, Michele Anayron, Bliss Francis “Pangky” Acain, Liga ng Barangay ABC President Robert de Lara at PAGLAUM Hall Province of Capitol.

The Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is aimed at organizing the Renewable Energy and Investments Summit in Misamis Oriental

Misamis Oriental is tapping into the vast renewable energy potential of the province estimated at 1,214.48 MW. Governor Peter M. Unabia, a renewable energy practitioner, has the push to deliver the tripling of renewable energy by 2028. Governor Unabia is a consistent advocate of renewable energy and the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice, and supports Misamis Oriental’s just transition to clean renewable energy.

The parties by entering into a Memorandum of Understanding have the following objectives: 

1. To produce a Renewable Energy and Investment Pan of Misamis Oriental with specific output that shall input to the drafting of a responsive Renewable Energy Code which will ensure just compensation to the host communities thereby motivating the host communities in the protection and conservation of natural resources potential as an Renewable Energy power resource;

2. To conduct for a comprehensive province-wide Local Energy Plan (LEP) integrating the Renewable Energy (RE) designs as a well laid-out standard for the competent authorities in the installation of RE Systems to the local communities;

3. To capacitate localities towards a local government unit Renewable Energy readiness by complementing: RE plans with potential energy sources and other environmental factors;

4. Come up with guidelines that will advise concemed officials in the LGUs on investment for Renewable Energy projects; and for their compliance to RA 11285: energy efficiency and conservation act. 

5. The partnership will endeavor towards the formation of the Technical Working Group. the crafting of the Provincial Renewable Energy Code and the Renewable Energy Roadmap which will be opened for investments on the dates designated by the parties.
